Sir Geoff Hurst has paid tribute to Kylian Mbappe after he matched his feat of scoring a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

Mbappe led a stunning comeback from France as they battled back from 2-0 down to force extra time against Argentina. Even after Lionel Messi appeared to have won it for Argentina in extra time, Mbappe struck again to send it to penalties.

Remarkably, the Paris Saint-Germain star finished on the losing side, although he did score his kick in the shootout, but he still emerged with a slice of World Cup history, as well as the golden boot.

That piece of history was held by Hurst alone for 56 years after his treble in the 1966 World Cup final for England against West Germany, but he was pleased to see Mbappe join him in the record books.

Commenting on Twitter ahead of the penalty shootout, Hurst said: “Many congratulations to Mbappe, whatever happens. I’ve had a great run!”

Although Mbappe finished on the losing side, he is still in line to become one of the all-time World Cup greats.

He won the tournament in 2018 and has already scored 12 World Cup goals, despite playing in just two editions.

For context, that is just one fewer than Lionel Messi, although he has played in five World Cups.
