TOPIC: Freedom From Affliction
BIBLE TEXT: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.” – Psalm 34:19
Today’s text establishes the fact that it is not only the unrighteous that suffer afflictions, the righteous equally do. The affliction of the righteous is not an indictment on the righteousness of the righteous as some people may think. Suffering is universal, whoever wherever you are, you will face the negative challenges of life.
In John 9:3, Jesus responded to a question posed to Him by His disciples concerning a man that was born blind. They wanted to know whether the blind man was suffering from the consequence of his personal sin or that of his parents. In response to this probe “Jesus answered, neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” This teaches that suffering does not necessarily have to be as a result of sin. It also teaches that when the righteous or believers suffer affliction, it gives God the covenant opportunity to demonstrate His Power and silence the wicked. The believer may not be immune to the challenges of life, but he will always receive deliverance and rescue from the God of our Salvation.
It is quite clear from Daniel 6:27 that God positions Himself to the righteous or the believer as his deliverer and rescuer. According to this text “God rescues and saves. He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth…” The word “rescue” is a very strong word from the Hebrew. It paints the picture of an individual, who is helpless and cannot deliver himself in a very oppressive situation. It is a state, where a believer had to be “extricated from a dungeon and carried out of prison or from an excruciating destructive stronghold.” This was the case of Daniel, a righteous man who was thrown into the lion’s den, where he was expected to be mauled and devoured by hungry lions. However, God showed up as a Deliverer, He rescued Daniel from the den of lions.
Every one of us, irrespective of his status, will always require God’s rescue mission. Since the fall of man, God has always engaged in rescue redemptive mission for mankind. This is because our daily challenges are beyond human capacity. Hence, in Psalm 50:15, we are admonished to call upon the Lord in times of trouble. When we do, He will deliver us and we shall glorify His name.
Beloved of God, no matter what the excruciating challenge is, do not start blaming yourself. You can tap into God’s rescue mission. All through the ages, God rescued all those who cried to Him for help and set them free. It is repeatedly stated in Psalm 107: 6, 13, 19, 28 that “…they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.” Are you under a perpetual bondage or suffering from any form of affliction? The good news is that God is able to set you free. Call upon His name today and He will answer you.
