Netflix is clearly getting ready for Halloween this month as the new Stephen King adaptation Mr. Harrigan’s Phone hits the streaming service alongside a new anthology of horror stories presented by Guillermo Del Toro and the latest chill-fest from director Mike Flanagan. There are lots of other shows and movies coming your way this October, including the historical K-drama The Queen’s Umbrella and the latest adaptation of the classic anti-war novel All Quiet On The Western Front.
Check out the highlights below and then keep scrolling for a look at all of the other titles that are landing on Netflix over the coming weeks.
In this South Korean comedy-drama, a tough female prosecutor is involved in a car accident and after waking from a coma, finds that she has lost her memory. This is bad enough but her life becomes even more complicated when she is suddenly thrust into the shoes of a troublemaking housewife due to a case of mistaken identity.
Also known as ‘Those Who Read the Hearts of Evil,’ this South Korean crime thriller drama is based on a non-fiction web novel of the same name and chronicles the field experiences of Kwon Il Yong, Korea’s No. 1 profiler.
In this documentary, the members of the Thai youth soccer team that got trapped in the Tham Luang Cave in 2018 recount their story of survival and how they were rescued. This gripping story was also told in Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives (streaming on Amazon Prime) and the recent Netflix series Thai Cave Rescue.
Not to be confused with the Willem Dafoe-starring adventure movie of the same name, this is an Uruguayan thriller about a car attendant who is forced to defend his turf and his neighbourhood from a drug cartel.
When Mr. Harrigan (Donald Sutherland) dies, Craig (Jaeden Martell), the teen who befriended the old man, receives messages sent from the guy’s phone. It could be assumed that somebody is playing tricks on Craig but as Harrigan’s phone was buried with him, it is clear that these messages are coming from beyond the grave. This tense new horror movie is based on a Stephen King short story that was featured in the anthology If It Bleeds.
From Mike Flanagan, the creator of Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Bly Manor comes another chilling Netflix series. This one is about a group of terminally ill teenagers at a hospice who come together at midnight to tell one another scary stories. They make a pact that the first one to die should communicate with the others from beyond the grave. Needless to say, bizarre and terrifying things start to happen when one of them does die.
When a young woman’s boyfriend mysteriously disappears within an unidentified light, she joins forces with a group of UFO hunters to track him down. As this South Korean mystery drama unfolds, the woman stumbles into a wild conspiracy.
In this rebooted competition series, twelve players take on a number of challenges to secure a cash prize. But there’s a twist – one of the players is a mole looking to sabotage the group’s money-making efforts! If the mole is correctly identified, the money will go to the person who exposed them.
In this German horror movie, a woman travels home with her two kids for her sister’s wedding. Unfortunately, she has more to worry about than a potentially snooze-inducing ceremony as she has to defend her family against blood-seeking old people who have escaped from their retirement home. It’s a case of ‘night of the living pensioners’ in this unusual chill-fest.
Mila Kunis stars as a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all. But when she is asked to take part in a crime documentary that relates to a shocking incident that she experienced as a teen, her meticulously crafted life starts to unravel. Mike Barker (Handmaid’s Tale) directs this dark and shocking tale.
Director Sam Macaroni’s last movie was Guest House, a pretty awful comedy starring Pauly Shore, so this action thriller starring Josh Duhamel as an amnesiac man on the run from a Cartel could be equally as forgettable. But as Macaroni has also worked on the action sequences for John Wick 3, there is a chance that this could surpass my low expectations.
After a married couple moves into their dream home, their life quickly becomes a nightmare when they start receiving terrifying letters from somebody calling themselves ‘The Watcher.’ Presumably, this is somebody far more threatening than the usual neighbourhood snoops that many of us have to live near, but the truth will be revealed when this Naomi Watts-starring series lands this October.
Arriving just in time for the spooky season, this new comedy movie stars Priah Ferguson as a teenage girl who teams up with her Halloween-hating dad (Marlon Wayans) to save the neighbourhood from a mischievous ancient spirit. Marlon’s films are often a bit hit and miss so there is the chance that this could be terrifyingly bad instead of scarily good.
This historical K-drama stars Kim Hye-soo as hot-headed queen Im Hwa-ryung who is struggling to discipline her troublemaking sons. She also has to contend with a competitive mother-in-law and the demands of palace life while simultaneously trying to turn her boys into proper crown princes.
Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris star in this thriller about two strangers who become friends after meeting one another on a plane. However, there is more to their relationship than meets the eye as one of the two men is a suspect in a missing person case and the other is an undercover operative on his trail.
Zoe Saldana stars as an American woman who travels to Italy to study but while there, she has more than her education to think about when she meets and falls in love with Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), a handsome Sicilian man. Unfortunately, their relationship is one that is destined to end in tragedy.
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is at the helm of this new fantasy movie about two best friends who find themselves on opposite sides of an epic battle when they are kidnapped and taken to an enchanted school for aspiring heroes and villains. Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso star as the friends at the centre of this exciting tale and they are surrounded by a star-studded cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Lawrence Fishburne, and Michelle Yeoh.
Guillermo del Toro presents this terrifying anthology series that features sinister stories from some of today’s most revered horror creators, including Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), Vincenzo Natali (Splice), and Keith Thomas (The Vigil). Not much is known about these stories at present but we do know that Ben Barnes, Rupert Grint, and Essie Davis are among the starry cast that features within them.
Jessica Chastain stars as Amy, a compassionate nurse and single mother, who develops a strong friendship with Charlie (Eddie Redmayne), an empathetic fellow nurse who starts at her unit. But when some of the patients die under mysterious circumstances, Amy realises that Charlie could be the person behind their deaths. This chilling movie has been positively received by critics so is definitely worth watching but probably not before your next hospital appointment!
Based on the Half Bad trilogy of books written by Sally Green, this British fantasy series stars Jay Lycurgo stars as the illegitimate son of the world’s most feared witch. He has been monitored for traits of his destructive father throughout his young life and when he finds himself caught between two warring clans, the truth about his inner nature is revealed.
This is the third movie adaptation of the classic World War I novel of the same name. This one stars Felix Kammerer as the young German soldier who experiences the terrifying reality of life on the western front during World War 1. The movie has been lauded for its excellent acting and heartbreaking script so should be well worth a watch, even if you have seen the earlier adaptations of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war tale.
Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) directs this hilarious animated movie about the scheming demon brothers of the title who must face their arch-nemesis, nun Sister Helly, who is notorious for expelling demons. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele voice the titular characters in this creepy and bizarre stop-motion adventure.
