President Muhammadu Buhari Monday said his regime has done extremely well with the resources at its disposal but those supposed to talk about his achievements are mute.
“Relative in terms of time and resources, this administration has done extremely well. I have to say it because those who are supposed to say it are not saying it. I don’t know why,” Mr Buhari said on Monday in Imo State.
Mr Buhari blamed past administrations for the infrastructure deficit and epileptic power sector, despite huge revenue generated from oil production.
The president, who was on a working visit to the South-east State, listed the fight against Boko Haram, rail and road construction among his regime’s achievements.
However, Mr Buhari’s regime has been criticised for skyrocketing debt profile, severe economic hardship and nepotism in handling the Fulani herdsmen issue.
Nigeria’s debt profile hit N41 trillion under the watch of Mr Buhari, according to data from the Debt Management Office.
With the regime proposing to borrow over N11 trillion to fund the 2023 budget, Mr Bubari’s regime will bequeath to Nigeria over N50 trillion debt when he leaves office in May next year.
In 2018, Nigeria displaced India to become the world’s poverty capital, according to a report by the Brookings Institution.
Also, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that the rate of unemployment in the country rose five-fold from 6.4 per cent in 2010, hitting 33.3 per cent as of the last quarter of 2020, all under the Buhari regime.
Lamenting debt accumulation by the Buhari regime, former Central Bank Governor and deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido II, said Nigeria was in a worse situation compared to where the country was in 2015.
“Our total revenue is not able to service our debt. And if anybody does not understand that we are in a complete mess, we are. There is no sense of urgency,” Mr Sanusi said.
