If you’re a fan of Sing and Sing 2 or are a fan of the X-Factor style competitions that these movies were seemingly inspired by, you might be interested in a third outing for Buster Moon and his talented friends.
But will Sing 3 become a reality? Or has the sequel been eliminated by the powers-that-be? Here’s what we know so far:
The first movie focused on Buster Moon, a Koala who presided over a theatre that had fallen on hard times. To preserve his theatre, he decided to produce the world’s greatest singing competition. The event drew in a number of talented singing acts and these helped to keep Buster’s theatre open.
In Sing 2, Buster took his theatre group to Redshore City, the entertainment capital of the world, where he hoped to impress a music mogul and hit the big time. To improve his chances, he tried to persuade Clay Calloway, the world’s most reclusive rock star to join them. Did he succeed? Well, there will be no spoilers here but the outcome won’t be a surprise to you if you have seen stories like this one before.
At the time of writing, there are no confirmed plans for Sing 3. The decision will likely lie with Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the Sing movies, and Garth Jennings, the director of the movies we have seen so far.
They haven’t announced a third movie yet but Matthew McConaughey, the actor who played Buster Moon, has discussed the possibility of a sequel. In an interview with CinemaBlend, when responding to the lack of a song and dance number from his character in the previous Sing movies, he said:
“Maybe Sing 3, but it wasn’t in this one and a lot of people have been saying that and I’m like that’s right, Buster Moon should sing, whistle, diddy, hum, dance, something. Oh, that’d be super fun. That could be it. Bring it up to the director, I’m with you. You hear that Garth?”
We don’t know if Garth has listened to Matthew or the fans that think Buster should get his moment on stage but as there is clearly interest in Sing 3 from people who have loved the movies, it might be that a sequel could happen.
If Sing 3 is released, we are likely to see Buster again and the various other animals that made up his theatre troupe. These include Meena the Elephant (Tori Kelly), Johnny the Gorilla (Taron Egerton), and porcupine rocker Ash (Scarlett Johansson).
In terms of plotline, we would likely see Buster and co continue their rise to the top. If they do become world famous, it might be that they realise fame isn’t all its cracked up to be, perhaps because one or more of the characters let fame go to their head.
This is just speculation as we have no way of knowing what the story might be at this point. However, we imagine it would follow the themes that have come before, such as…
There was a 5-year gap between Sing and Sing 2 so if the people behind the movie follow this pattern, Sing 3 could be released in 2027.
This is assuming a third movie is given the green light. But as Illumination Studios has already released three Despicable Me movies and two spin-offs with the adorable/irritating (delete as applicable) Minions, it’s clear that they aren’t averse to continuing their franchises. As such, we suspect they will announce ‘Sing 3’ or a spin-off with one of the main Sing characters at some point in the future.
