The Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, Nasarawa State, was instituted in 1983 via Decree No. 33 of 1979, as amended in Decree No. 28 of 1987, with a mandate to provide full-time and part- time courses education in technology, applied science, commerce and management, and in such other fields applicable to the developmental needs of the country.

The Polytechnic, commenced activities on 30th January, 1984, with about 220 students, in seven Departments, viz: Accountancy, Business Administration and Management, Secretarial Studies, Architectural Technology, Estate Management, Building and Quantity Surveying and Liberal Studies. The seven Departments were divided into the School of Business Administration and the School of Environmental Studies.

The Institution started with about 223 staff made up of 57 senior and 166 junior staff. The Polytechnic now has become a great citadel of learning, and is among the frontline Polytechnics in Nigeria. The Polytechnic now has over 20,000 students spread across seven (7) Academic Schools.

The Polytechnic provides about 28 programmes, at both the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels, all of which have been authorized via the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

In addition, the Polytechnic has produced a giant range of world-class graduates, wealth and job creators who are now leading quintessential sectors of national and global economy. It additionally prides itself as a principal producer of country builders, technocrats, democrats, politicians and captains of industries. The Polytechnic is dedicated to the admission ratio of 70:30 in favour of science and technology, primary minimum standard, and a correct measure of academic stability.

Consequently, the Polytechnic has grown to be the centre of appeal to hundreds of admission seekers, nationally and internationally. In line with the NBTE’s laid-down standards and the Nigeria’s policy on technological drive, the Polytechnic emphasizes that its students must have a mastery of each theoretical and practical aspects of their various fields, and that they have to pay adequate attention to laboratory and workshop practicals, both on campus and during their industrial attachment outside the campus. That way, we can ensure they turn out to be employers of labour instead than jobseekers on graduation.
