It’s official: a new Fantastic Four movie is on the way. If you’re a fan of Marvel’s ‘first family,’ this will likely be fantastic news for you.
We don’t have every detail about this new addition to the MCU just yet but we have scoured the internet for all of the information that we can give to you at this stage.
So, without further ado, let’s flame on!
An official release date was announced at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con and thankfully, we don’t have too long to wait. The new Fantastic Four movie will be released on November 8th 2024. That’s assuming there are no delays, of course, but at this point in time, there is no news of any hold-ups.
Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts was originally in line to helm the movie which was certainly good news due to the terrific movies he has made for the MCU thus far.
Unfortunately, he bowed out of the Fantastic Four reboot when he decided he wanted to move away from superhero movies for a while. So, who is taking his place?
Well, at the time of writing, it seems likely that Matt Shakman will be directing the movie. He has only directed one movie to date – 2014’s middling thriller Cut Bank – but he has been involved as director in a lot of TV shows, including the brilliant It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Marvel series WandaVision.
Is he the right man for the job? Only time will tell but as he already has connections with Marvel, we think he’s a pretty good fit for the Fantastic Four movie.
There is no news of casting at the moment but there is speculation that John Krasinski will be taking on the role of Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic. We saw him play the part in the recent Doctor Strange movie and while his character existed in a different section of the Multiverse, it’s logical to suggest that he might take on the role again. After all, Benedict Cumberbatch played every version of himself in the Multiverse so why shouldn’t every Reed Richards be John Krasinksi?
If Krasinki is in the movie, it might be that his wife, Emily Blunt, takes on the role of Sue Storm. This has long been a rumour although Blunt doesn’t seem too keen on the idea.
If they aren’t in the movie, there are many other actors who could star as Reed and Sue. Dan Stevens and John David Washington are two contenders for Reed and there is speculation that Lily James or Samara Weaving might take on the role of Sue.
Zac Efron’s name is one that has circulated online in discussions about Johnny Storm and Stephen Graham is just one of the actors that fans think will be a good fit for the Thing.
These are all just rumours but we will likely hear more soon. In the meantime, let us know who you would like to see in the Fantastic Four reboot.
We don’t know at this stage but Kevin Feige has suggested that it won’t be another origin story. This is good news as we have already seen the origin of the Fantastic Four played out in two other movies.
In terms of the movie’s big bad, the obvious contender is Doctor Doom. But as that character has been brought to life twice (both times unsuccessfully) in other movies, it might be that another supervillain is given the chance to take centre stage.
We think Kang the Conqueror will make an appearance as he will have a major part to play in the next phase of the MCU. As the Fantastic Four have confronted him before (in the comic books at least), it seems likely that they will team up to take him down in the new movie.
Well, it can’t be any worse than what has come before, can it? Admittedly, this is what I thought in the days leading up to Josh Trank’s 2015 movie but that turned out to be worse than the uninspired Tim Story-directed movies that were released in 2005 and 2007.
For now, we will just have to wait and see. But as most of the movies within the MCU have been fairly decent, it’s likely that the new Fantastic Four movie will be better than their previous cinematic misfires. Here’s hoping anyway!
That’s all we know for now but we aim to update this page when new information about the movie is released.
