Tottenham vs Liverpool: I’d have shown Harry Kane red card – Ex-EPL referee, Clattenburg

Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg has given his verdict on the controversial incidents during Tottenham’s Premier League 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

Liverpool were forced to settle for a draw against Tottenham, with goals from Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson, Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane ensuring both teams shared a point each.

But during the encounter, an incident involving Kane and Robertson grabbed plenty of headlines.

Kane was given a yellow card for a challenge on Robertson, with Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, saying at his post-match press conference that he believed the tackle deserved a red card.

Clattenburg, who refereed a World Cup final as well as many top matches in the Premier League, agreed with Klopp’s view that the England captain should have been given a red card.

“If Harry Kane’s lunge on Andy Robertson is not a red card, then I’m not sure what is,” Clattenburg told the Daily Mail.

“The tackle is high, it is above the ankle, studs are showing and it is late. It didn’t have a good look to it from any angle.

“Andy Robertson sees the challenge coming from Harry Kane. He knows if he leaves his leg planted, then there is a good chance he will be getting stretchered out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and spending Christmas in a moon boot.

“By jumping out of the way, Robertson avoids serious damage. Kane gets away with his lunge as referee Paul Tierney shows only a yellow, with VAR Chris Kavanagh deciding it was not a clear and obvious error. I would have shown Kane red.”
