Erik ten Hag has revealed that Harry Maguire isn’t guaranteed to be a regular starter for Manchester United despite being club captain.

The England international has divided opinion among United fans in recent months with his performances being seen as a key factor in the club’s mixed form.

Maguire has been dropped by Erik ten Hag who is adamant that he won’t name players for the sake of it

Ten Hag has not been scared to make the big calls with Maguire missing being left out of the XI in their last two matches

After being dropped for the club’s clash with Liverpool on Monday night, Maguire was left on the bench against Southampton on Saturday lunchtime as well, casting doubt over his future in Ten Hag’s plans.

With Bruno Fernandes named as skipper against Southampton and Raphael Varane coming into the side in the last week, Ten Hag has said that he won’t guarantee regular starts for any players, no matter who they are.

Ten Hag said: “I think that doesn’t mean when you are captain you are established to play always. Especially when you also have Varane in your squad.

“We have options. And you have already said, Varane, his stature is immense and in pre-season we took a decision to build him physically so he had a bit of a slow start.

“So he was fit in the first games but in the first period of pre-season he wasn’t always, so we are happy we built him in that way and you see when the team needed him he was really there and his profile, his stature and what he won already in the past shows he can really contribute to his team.
