Bollywood VS Africa

With the rise and fall of Bollywood channels in Africa, who is taking the lead?

Hindi series has been dominating the African entertainment industry for decades now; with their thrilling and nail-bitten storylines, we can’t deny the fact that Bollywood is one of the best in the movie industry.

Years ago local channels in Africa started broadcasting Bollywood series such as “Shree” which is the first Hindi series to be shown in most parts of Africa, Ghana is one.

Ever since the love for the Bollywood series has spread around Africa, other local channels including Glow Tv, Tv3 Ghana, Televista, and Joyprime focused their attention on broadcasting the Bollywood series.

Then comes the launch of Zee World 7 Years ago as a new and the only 24 hours Bollywood channel to be launched in Africa. Local channels like Glow Tv gave Zeeworld tight competition for years until GlowTV was scrapped from DSTV.

Glow Tv is a south African channel owned by NIS MEDIA, the channel broadcast Hindi shows dubbed in English with subtitles; series such as “This is Love”, “True Love” and “Young Love” put the channel on the map making it one of the best Bollywood channels in Africa, the channel has been facing numerous challenges for the past few years after DSTV slapped them by removing the channel, Openview gave them a double slap with their unannounced removal but after legal actions, the channel is back on Openview, but for how long? Openview no longer advertises anything about the channel on its social media platforms. Why? well, that’s a question for the gods.

eExtra suffered the same fate from DSTV when they were removed from the platform unannounced.

The establishment of zee world brought most of the local channels to their knees in terms of broadcasting Bollywood dramas, Channels like Tv3 Ghana suffered from this; Tv3 stopped broadcasting series produced by Zee Entertainment Enterprises upon the arrival of zee world. However, in 2015-2016 AdomTv Ghana came into the picture with “Kumkum Bhagya” one of the most watched Indian series in Africa.

Tv3 Ghana which was the first channel in Ghana to broadcast a Bollywood series “Shree” left the competition after “Priya” ever since the channel is trying its best to obtain its spot. Still, the lives of Adom TV and its sister channel Joyprime are not letting their guards down.

Joyprime was one of the masters in the game with series such as “Strange Love”, “Jodha Akbar” and many others but where is joy prime now? Well in the sink probably.

The rise and fall of many local channels as far as showing Indian series are concerned continue, not to talk of KTN in Kenya, Atinka Tv Ghana, and some less known channels.

Well, some go to the extent of blaming the Bollywood series for the downfall of local dramas, but isn’t it wired to see local producers blaming foreign producers instead of learning and upping their game to make the competition tight? Ghana to date has no 24/7 telenovelas channel, yet still, local dramas are down the drain, and who takes the blame? Bollywood “SERIOUSLY”

Zee World, Starlife, Zee one, e Extra and Glow Tv, and maybe Televista is currently leading the chart when it comes to Bollywood content, but eExtra, Glow Tv, and Televista can safely leave the chart. Why?

eExtra can’t be considered a 24/7 Bollywood channel since it broadcast shows from other countries same applies to Televista.

Glow Tv is eliminated due to the repeating of series, how can they be showing 3 repeated series along with 2 new series, like who does that?
Zee One is considered a binge channel for zee world and so is eliminated, we are tired of repeating it.

Now Zee world and Star life are the 2 most watched Bollywood channels in Africa, showing about 7 series a day. Is zee world better than starlife as some people claim?
